School mural

Mural created for, and with, children at my daughters' school. The aim was to show them how the design process works, to give them ownership and pride in the mural, and to create something to make people smile! The project began with a slideshow and enthusiastic discussion with year 1 and year 2 children, followed by them drawing up their ideas onto a pre-prepared elevation drawing. I (Julien) then collated many of these into an integrated design which I drew out on the wall. We then had continuous groups of children paint the final piece, with myself busily mixing paints and trying to keep them from painting each other...

The initial phase involved year 1 and year 2 children drawing up their own ideas on a simple elevation drawing of the wall.
This is the final design, composed of several different drawings, with construction grid lines added.
The grid is drawn on the wall with a builder's chalk line and the animals are chalked in.
The chalk outlines are made permanent with black paint
Children paint the wall in groups of 4, rotating every 15 minutes. Ordinary house emulsion paint is used, largely because it is water soluble!
